We are looking for an ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) / Sustainability Manager for the Southeast Asia Region, based out of our Makati office in Manila, Philippines. The role will have a regional scope and will count on a small team to support projects locally. This position reports directly to the Southeast Asia Managing Director, and functionally to the Global Head of Sustainability. The ESG / Sustainability Manager will ensure our projects not only meet compliance standards but also create positive environmental and social impact in the communities where we operate.This is an office-based role that will require travel to project sites during development, construction, and operation phases. The main focus of this position is on the Environmental and Social management of our projects, with sustainability strategy and reporting developed in close coordination with the global team in Spain.
Job Description
Main Responsibilities:
- Environmental Management: Lead the environmental strategy and implementation for all projects in the region, ensuring full compliance with local legislation and international sustainability frameworks (including IFC Performance Standards and the Equator Principles). Responsibilities include:
- Environmental Permitting & Documentation: Prepare all documentation required to obtain environmental permits across Southeast Asian countries, ensuring timely approvals for each project.
- Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA): Lead the development of comprehensive EIAs in alignment with ACCIONA Energía's internal standards and the IFC framework, identifying potential environmental risks and defining mitigation measures.
- Compliance Oversight: Guarantee ongoing compliance with environmental permit conditions and internal corporate standards during the construction and operation phases.
- Environmental Management Plans: Oversee the implementation of waste, water, and biodiversity management programs on-site, adapting procedures to include any additional local regulatory requirements.
- Legal and Regulatory Monitoring: Annually assess compliance with environmental laws and regulations using ACCIONA's global compliance tool (WorldLex).
- Reporting & Communication: Manage all required environmental communications with government authorities, ensuring transparency and accountability.
- Climate Risk Assessment: When applicable (e.g., for projects financed by international institutions), prepare climate risk impact assessments to identify potential climate-related vulnerabilities and adaptation needs.
- Social & Human Rights:Drive the company's social performance and human rights due diligence across all regional projects, fostering positive and inclusive relationships with local communities. Responsibilities include:
- Social Impact Assessments (SIA): Prepare SIAs in line with ACCIONA Energía's standards, local regulations, and IFC Performance Standards to identify social risks and opportunities.
- Human Rights Assessments: Conduct targeted Human Rights Impact Assessments for projects that involve financing institutions, indigenous communities, or potential resettlements.
- Community Engagement: Lead proactive engagement with affected communities to ensure they are well-informed about project activities. Maintain accessible communication channels for concerns, feedback, or reports of potential human rights violations.
- Local Value Creation: Design and implement Social Development Plans that foster local employment, capacity building, and community investment aligned with ACCIONA Energía's commitment to shared value creation.
- Human Rights Due Diligence: Adapt and oversee ACCIONA's human rights due diligence framework to the local context, ensuring it is effectively applied and monitored at project level.
- Audits and Controls: Coordinate human rights and SCISS (Sustainability, Compliance, Integrity, Safety, and Security) audits in specific projects, ensuring findings are addressed and corrective actions are implemented.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify and propose new control measures or adapt existing ones to enhance the SCISS system's applicability in the Southeast Asia region.
- ESG Risks & Strategy: Map ESG risks and opportunities, monitor delivery of the Sustainability Master Plan, and adapt global sustainability policies to the Southeast Asia context.
- Decarbonization & Circularity: Deploy corporate decarbonization initiatives, support carbon budgeting, and drive waste recovery and the use of recycled materials in projects.
- Sustainability Reporting & ESG Finance: Ensure reliable ESG data reporting, define local scorecards, and support financial and commercial teams with sustainability-related reporting for lenders, investors, and regulators.
- Leadership & Engagement: Represent ACCIONA Energía in sustainability forums, lead volunteering initiatives, coordinate ESG training, and promote the company's sustainability leadership across stakeholders.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Experience in leading teams
- At least 6 years of experience in the field of ESG for renewables, construction, operations or related industry
- Knowledge of local environmental and social regulations.
- Experience conducting environmental and social assessments for renewable energy or infrastructure projects.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills with local authorities.
- Familiarity with international standards such as IFC Performance Standards and Equator Principles.
